WHAT IS DISCIPLESHIP?

What exactly is discipleship? What does it look like in real life?
Before we jump into discipleship, let’s first look at what it means to be a disciple.

The word disciple means to be a student and a follower. To be a disciple, we are to learn Jesus’ teachings and purposefully follow Him based on them.

Being a disciple involves many aspects. However, all the aspects fall in either two categories.

-
Our love and intentions towards God
-
Our love and intentions towards others

As disciples, we are to take steps to create habits that will deepen our relationship with God, as well as, willfully love and serve others.
As disciples, our desire should be to grow closer to God and actively live out the life He planned for us. Though it looks different for everyone, His plans are the ultimate best. Every aspect of our lives should be surrendered to His direction and guidance.
We are striving to be like Jesus. We keep moving in that direction and resolve to be life-long learners of Him and His teachings.
As disciples, our desire should also be to serve and love one another. Everyone should be actively using their spiritual gifts and talents/skills to edify the church.
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms.” 1 Peter 4:10

Once we get a good grasp on these things, we should be venturing out to disciple others and continue the cycle.

So what exactly is discipleship?

Based on Matthew 28:19-20:

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
In the broadest perspective, discipleship:

-Is the investment of time and effort to train, teach, and equip another believer for spiritual maturity and development.
-Is being an integral part of another believer’s spiritual journey as they strive to make Jesus the Lord of their life and intentionally serve the Kingdom.
